The following tables will help you identify which Duramax diesel engine a truck has based on the 8th digit of the vehicle identification number (VIN).

2001 - 2004 VIN Number Engine Identification:

8th Digit of VIN Number	Duramax Engine Generation:
1	LB7
2	LLY (the LLY was introduced mid-year in 2004)

 

2005 VIN Number Engine Identification:

8th Digit of VIN Number	Duramax Engine Generation:
2	LLY

*The LLY was the only Duramax engine offered in 2005.

 

2006 VIN Number Engine Identification:

8th Digit of VIN Number	Duramax Engine Generation:
2	LLY 2006 version
D	LBZ (the LBZ was introduced late in 2006)

2007 VIN Number Engine Identification:

8th Digit of VIN Number	Duramax Engine Generation:
D	LBZ
6	LMM

 

2008 - 2010 LMM Vin Number:

The LMM was the only Duramax offered during these years. The 8th digit is a "6"

2011 LML VIN Number:

For LML equipped trucks (2011 - present model year), the 8th digit of the VIN number is a "8".
